1829 STOURBRIDGE LION Locomotive
comprising 25 se-tenant pairs of two

August 8th 1829 witnessed the first run in the USA by a steam locomotive intended for commercial use, when the D&HR's young mechanic Horatio Allen drove The Stourbridge Lion some 3 miles at the Hinesdale, PA end of this 4ft 3in gauge horse-operated colliery tramway. The Lion was built by Foster, Rastrick & Co. in Stourbridge, hence the name Stourbridge Lion. Her sister locomotive AGENORIA is also available as a 50-stamp sheet in our eBay Store.
Stourbridge Lion eventually became an excellent static pumping engine, while in 1932 the D&HR built a fine replica LION with some of her original parts. She is currently on view at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, on loan from the Smithsonian Institute. The sheet is ideal for framing and an excellent piece of D&HR / Stourbridge Lion Locomotive Memorabilia.
